Mafete's story (rain water harvesting)

Dear Friends

Thanks to your enormous support in fund raising, we have met our target for supporting the rain water harvesting project. We have heard how this has made a difference to one child and wanted to share the story with you.

Mafete was only fourteen years old when her mother went to look for a job outside Kodumela, leaving her to take care of two siblings. Mafete used to visit the (Area Development Project) ADP garden daily after school to irrigate and weed the garden, in return for some of the produce, but, at the end of the afternoon, she would disappear and they knew very little about her. World Vision Kodumela ADP staff noticed this pattern and became interested in Mafete.

They visited her home and found that there was no adult living there so Mafete had to manage the household, try to keep up her education and tend the ADP garden for food. “The ADP were able to give Mafete vegetables from the garden, but were unable to do more because our funds are committed for specific tasks”, said the Kodumela ADP Manager, Ledile Mphahlele.. As part of the water harvesting project Choko has funded, the ADP were able to prioritise providing water to a vegetable garden at Mafete’s home. This has now become a sufficiently viable economic enterprise to enable her mother to return and support the family from it, rather than needing a job out of the area, thus relieving the pressure on Mafete. The ADP has also been able to link her mother to a government-funded project which pays here a small stipend each month so the family are a complete and fully supported unit.

So, thank you again for the difference you have made.

We’ll be in touch next year about our next project – aspects of child health, including an education and advocacy programme to increase the level of child immunisation. This will have a critical impact on children in their early years, saving lives and improving prospects of these young people.

We wish you a happy festive season

The Choko Team
